Zero Waste Schools : Building a Generation of Climate-Conscious Changemakers
Zero Waste Schools is Project Mumbai’s flagship sustainability education initiative designed to empower students, teachers, and school communities to adopt environmentally responsible habits and practices. Through hands-on activities, awareness sessions, creative engagements, and action-based learning, the program nurtures a culture of sustainability from a young age.
Our aim is simple yet powerful — to help schools move towards zero waste, circular thinking, and responsible citizenship, while making sustainability engaging, practical, and joyful for children.
What is Zero Waste Schools?
The Zero Waste Schools program works closely with schools to integrate sustainable practices into everyday school life. Students learn about waste segregation, plastic reduction, recycling, composting, water conservation, climate awareness, and responsible consumption — not just in theory, but through interactive, on-ground experiences.
From classroom workshops to school-wide campaigns, the program enables students to become active environmental leaders in their communities.
Sustainability Mela
A Celebration of Learning, Action & Impact
A highlight of the Zero Waste Schools journey is the Sustainability Mela — a vibrant, student-led festival of ideas, innovation, and environmental action.
The mela brings together:
- Student-led exhibitions on sustainability themes
- Creative displays made from recycled and upcycled materials
- Poetry, performances, storytelling, and films
- Interactive games, quizzes, and awareness stalls
- Thought-provoking discussions and reflections
The Sustainability Mela transforms learning into a celebration of purpose, where students proudly showcase their ideas, solutions, and commitment to a greener future.
