Every day, millions of Mumbaikars travel through the city’s railway stations. These spaces are where journeys begin, conversations happen, and communities come together. Library Junction is Project Mumbai’s initiative to transform these everyday public spaces into hubs of learning, imagination, and connection by bringing free community libraries to railway stations across the city.

The initiative began with India’s first railway station library at Churchgate Station, proving that when books become accessible, people naturally rediscover the joy of reading. As the initiative grows, Library Junction aims to establish similar reading spaces across Mumbai, making books a part of every routine.

Why Library Junction?

Mumbai’s suburban railway network carries more than 7.5 million commuters every day across over 400 kilometres of railway lines, making it one of the busiest commuter rail systems in the world.

At the same time, Mumbai means long commutes, demanding work schedules, and constant digital distractions, finding the time to visit a traditional library has become increasingly difficult. Library Junction was created around one simple idea that Instead of asking people to go to a library, why not bring the library to where people already are?

By integrating libraries into railway stations, we aim to make reading convenient, accessible, and a natural part of everyday life. India’s first railway station library was inaugurated at Churchgate Station through a collaborative initiative by Project Mumbai and Western Railway, with support from Larsen & Toubro (L&T).

Designed as a welcoming community reading space, the library offers commuters free access to books across diverse genres and languages. The library houses over 1,000 curated books, including fiction, non-fiction, biographies, children’s books in Hindi, English and Marathi, and other languages. Visitors can browse the collection, borrow books free of cost, spend time reading while waiting for their train, or donate books for others to enjoy.

A Library Built by the Community

One of the most unique aspects of Library Junction is that it belongs to the people of Mumbai. Every book on its shelves has been donated by citizens who believe that stories deserve to be shared. Families donate books their children have outgrown or readers pass on novels they loved. Professionals contribute books that inspired them. Authors have begun donating copies of their own work so that their stories can reach even more readers.

The initiative was inaugurated by ex south African cricket team captain AB de villers on 5th June, 2026 and has also received support from actor and environmental advocate Dia Mirza, railway officials, educational institutions, and hundreds of individual citizens who continue to strengthen the library’s growing collection.

Impacting Lives Through Stories

The response to Library Junction has demonstrated that reading is far from disappearing, and becoming more accessible when books are placed within everyday spaces. Within the first 45 days of operations 700+ commuters have borrowed books, hundreds of books were donated by citizens. Readers from all age groups including students, working professionals, senior citizens, and families became part of the growing reading community.

Library Junction is more than a place to borrow books. It is a community space where commuters exchange recommendations, discover new authors, reconnect with reading habits, and experience moments of calm amidst Mumbai’s fast-paced life. Project Mumbai’s initiative was to turn waiting time into reading time, the initiative transforms railway stations into spaces of curiosity, reflection, and learning.
