A Library on Your Commute

Project Mumbai, in association with Cityflo, has launched Turning Pages, a mini library on the bus, bringing books directly to one of the places where Mumbaikars spend a considerable part of their day commuting.

Mumbai is a city that is always moving. We rush to work, rush home, rush to meetings, rush to catch the next train or bus. In a city where time is often the one thing we never seem to have enough of, reading can easily become something we keep postponing.

“I’ll read when I have time.”

But what if that time is already part of your day?

The idea is you don’t necessarily need more time to read. Sometimes, you just need to make the time you already have count. Your daily commute can become your reading time.

Step Into a World of Stories

As you step onto a participating Cityflo bus, you’ll find a collection of books waiting for you. Pick a book that catches your attention, scan the QR code on the shelf and discover more about it. And then, simply pick a book and start reading. A commute that once felt like an hour spent getting from one place to another can now become an hour spent with a story, an idea or a new perspective. Because a book doesn’t need a library building to find a reader. Sometimes, all it needs is a seat on a bus.

Have a Book? Pass It On

Turning Pages is not only about reading. It is also about sharing. If you have books at home that you’ve already read and would like someone else to discover, you can donate them to the initiative. Just drop off a book and let us know where you would like it to be placed. You can also share your reading preferences with us, helping us understand what Mumbaikars want to read.

One book can travel far beyond its first reader.

A book sitting untouched on a shelf at home could become someone else’s companion on their morning commute. It could introduce someone to a new author, spark a conversation, or simply make a long journey feel a little shorter.

Making Reading More Accessible

Turning Pages is part of Read Mumbai, Project Mumbai’s larger initiative with Cityflo to make books and reading more accessible across the city.

We believe that reading should not be limited by where you live, where you study or how much time you have. Books should be present in the places where people already are. That is why we have been taking libraries beyond traditional spaces and into everyday public spaces.

Earlier this year, Project Mumbai opened Library Junction at Churchgate station, creating a library right inside one of Mumbai’s busiest commuter spaces. Within its first few months, more than 1,300 people have borrowed books from the library, which houses over 2,500 books across genres in Hindi, Marathi and English.

What makes the initiative even more encouraging is the growing culture of sharing around it. People are not just borrowing books; they are donating them too, adding to a cycle where one reader helps another discover their next story.

If people don’t always have time to go to a library, why not bring the library to them?

There is something wonderfully Mumbai about reading on a bus. Outside the window, the city continues to rush, people heading to work, shops opening, traffic moving, conversations happening. But inside, you turn a page, and for a few minutes, the city feels like it slows down.

Turning Pages is our attempt to make reading a little easier to fit into everyday life. To transform an ordinary commute into an opportunity to pause, discover and read. Because in a city that never stops moving, perhaps we can make a little more room for stories.
