Dia Mirza Leads the Charge in India’s Largest Citizen-Led Public Art Initiative at Mumbai Railway Stations

Actor Dia Mirza rolled up her sleeves on Wednesday and spent a long time beautifying the walls of Sewri railway station, also kicking off Hamara Station Hamari Shaan, India’s largest citizen-led public art initiative launched by NGO Project Mumbai.

Dia said she was excited to beautify Mumbai, not just giving her own time for the city but also introducing her daughter Samaira to volunteering with Project Mumbai– celebrating the Festival of Giving DaanUtsav as well as Gandhi Jayanti. “Ownership of the city through volunteering work cannot be a better way of doing shramdaan and painting is anyways so addictive”, Dia said, talking to the hundreds of students who had gathered there to volunteer their time.

Hamara Station Hamari Shaan by Project Mumbai is in partnership with Central Railway, wherein 13 stations, several thousand feet of space, will be beautified through art work.

As part of the initiative, Project Mumbai has identified all paintable areas across these stations including the ticket counters, walls along platform one, walls outside the stations, foot over bridges as well as the staircases. There have been designs planned and approved by the combined team of railways and Project Mumbai to ensure sensitivities as well as aesthetics and kept in mind.

“We are so excited to see our station get spruced up, especially with the energy and colour brought by youngsters”, remarked Ms. Meena, Station Master of King Circle Station, who has been personally monitoring the station work with the Project Mumbai team.

The initiative will continue till October 15. The entire paint, gloves, brushes etc are being provided free of cost by the Project Mumbai team.
